thousands caught in Darfur Fighting

02.20.08

Just picked this up from CNN

An estimated 8000 refugees have been stranded on the Chad border by a fresh Sudanese offensive against the rebels.  The Chadian Government is refusing entry to the refugees….

If there is such a thing as ‘A just war’ then surely we should intervene in Sudan?  With 200,000 people dead and hundreds of thousands driven across the border or trapped in camps surely the west can apply all manner of pressure on the Government of Sudan?

It may be that political and economic sanctions could be used to much greater effect (with the active support of China…) but failing that…. the UN should consider all options, including military.

I remember Kosovo and the plight of refugees there.  Nato went into action to force the rogue state of Serbia to the table.  This had a ’cast iron’ UN mandate, and I would like to see the UN being much more assertive in the Darfur region in the same way.

This is my private view and I don’t pretend to represent the Lib Dems on this one.
